Phyto-Riker (GIHOC) Pharmaceuticals Ltd was established in 1998 when the state-owned Ghana Industrial Holding Corporation (GIHOC) Pharmaceuticals Ltd was acquired by Phyto-Riker Pharmaceuticals Inc. Through a competitive privatization process. GIHOC Pharmaceuticals Ltd, formerly the State Pharmaceutical Corporation was established in 1962. The factory situated at Dome near Achimota on the Accra Nsawam road was completed in 1967.

A Ghanaian management and technical staff ran the factory. The United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) offered the company the services of technical experts in the areas of production, quality control and plant maintenance especially between 1971 and 1974. UNIDO was also responsible for arranging some refresher courses for some of the technical staff.

An expansion program funded by the German Government, provided the company with a modern production block commissioned in 1991 with increased capacity and also helped update Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) standards. As part of the agreement, some technical staff of the company received refresher training in Germany. Although capacity utilization and total output were low under state ownership, GIHOC products maintained a very strong reputation for quality.

The 1991 block was in need of refurbishing when Phyto-Riker took over. The refurbishment was carried out and even a major upgrade, that of air-conditioning in the warehouses were made.
